Sam Tate Stoner, 87, of Chattanooga, died on Sunday, November 8, 2009 at a local hospital.

He was born in Chattanooga to Martin and Milta Stoner. He graduated from Central High School, Tennessee Weslyan College, Middle Tennessee State University, and Peabody College at Vanderbilt University.

Mr. Stoner taught Senior American History and Economics for 39 years at Central High School and was chairman of the Social Studies Department. In the past years, Mr. Stoner was also a curriculum writer for the Tennessee State Department of Education.

He was a former member of the Collaborative College Board of Tennessee, the Legislature Committee of East Tennessee Education Association, Chairman for the Chattanooga Regional History Museum, and Chairman of Historical Documents for the Chattanooga Area Historical Association.

He was a WWII Army veteran with the 27th Tank Battalion, a longtime member of East Lake Methodist Church and East Lake Nazarene Church. He was a resident of Martin Boyd Christian Assisted Living Home for three years and then Missionary Ridge Life Care facility until his death. He had advanced Alzheimer’s.

He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Evelyn Stoner.

Survivors include his cousins and caretakers, Eddie and Joan Stork; cousins, Sarah Ellis of Mt. Gretna, Pa., and Bill Tate of Columbus, Oh.; and pastor and special friends, Charles and Diane Ellis.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 11, at the funeral home with Rev. Charles Ellis officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Hills Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 10, at the East Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home, Crematory and Florist, 404 South Moore Road.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Alzheimer’s Association.
