Class of 1965 Blog

Friday evening, January 7th,  my husband, Hal and our two dogs left about 3:00 PM on a hike (we live in the wet mountains in Westcliffe, CO).  My daughter and I had gone to Pueblo shopping with friends.  When we returned home, around 7 PM it was dark and very cold and we noticed the Polaris was still gone.  We both became concerned and drove to one of the areas he usually goes hiking.  He was not there so we continued our search.  Emily wanted to stop back by the house just in case he had made it home.  Just as we started up the driveway we saw the lights of the Polaris.  I was ready to "let him have it" until I saw him.  He was bloody, he was very pale and very weak and shaking so hard his teeth were actually clattering.

It seems around 4:45 his blood sugar started dropping (he is type 1 diabetic) and he had failed to put any candy in his pockets.  He knew there was sugar products in the Polaris so he started heading toward where he had parked.  That is all he remembers, he went into a diabetic coma and of course he fell and was unconscious for 2 1/2 hours.  Only by an act of God did he awake.  He thought he was dreaming as he kept crying out the name of Jesus and he began to "bind" Satan.  He kept wondering why he wasn't coming out of this dream and then he saw shadows around him.  It was our two dogs guarding him.

He was in a lot of pain as the fall had broken his collar bone and he was also badly bruised.  He had lost his glasses and it was so dark he couldn't see.  That night was just a crescent moon but he began to pray as he knew he had to find the right exit and not go further into the woods.  All of a sudden one of the stars and/or plants began to shine over the trees.  He "followed the star" and ran smack into the fence he had crawled under to start his hike.  He followed the fence to the Polaris; and he and the dogs drove home.

Over the years Hal has been diagnosed as type 1 diabetic, he has never experienced a coma.  When his blood sugar drops he always has around 10 min. to get sugar into his body.  Not this time.  Not only did he have the injuries, and the experience of being unconscious for all that time, but also hypothermia.  I drove him to Pueblo to the hospital (1 1/2 hrs. from our home) and the doctors could not believe he came out of that coma without someone there to give him sugar.  The doctor spoke to me in private and indicated "he should be in the morgue and this is a miracle."  We know who gave him the sugar - our Lord gave him the sugar.  He had a ministry speaking engagement a few days after this in NC and he made the trip just fine.  He is still sore and of course, recovering from the break to his collar bone.  My husband is a man of faith and a man of prayer.  God is not done with him and the great ministry he does.

I wanted to share this with all of you as I know our class of '65 believes in the power of prayer and we all need to hear that God is still on the throne and he's still a God of miracles.  Linda Lewis Crossley
