John Max Smith, 63, of Athens, died Thursday night, March 3, 2011, at Athens Regional Medical Center.

A native of Clayton, GA, he was a son of the late Harve L. and Helen Mosley Smith, and was also preceded in death by one brother, Rex V. Smith.  He was a member of Keith Memorial United Methodist Church, was a Mason and Shriner and was a former member of Athens Elks Lodge 1927, where he was a former Exalted Ruler.  He was a graduate of Chattanooga Central High School and had attended Middle Tennessee State University.  He had been self-employed as an insurance salesman.

Survivors include his wife, Becky Shell Smith of Athens; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Heather and Shawn Lingerfelt, Amber and James Parker and Amanda Swafford and her fiance, Nathan Watts, all of Athens; one granddaughter, Makenzie Lingerfelt; two grandsons, Brayden Lingerfelt and Tucker Swafford; one brother and sister-in-law, Harve and Janice Smith of Fallon, Nev.; and one brother-in-law and his wife, the Rev. Reed and Cathy Shell of Cleveland.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Keith Memorial United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dennie Humphreys and the Rev. Reed Shell officiating.  Burial will follow in Cedar Grove Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Bryan Walker, Jeremy Lingerfelt, Wood Talkington, Dr. Skip Farr, Tom Dixon, Bob Burkey, Christopher Greene and Paul Pratt.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m., Saturday at Smith Funeral Home & Cremation Service.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Keith Memorial United Methodist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 1, Athens, TN 37371-0001.
