Thanks to Bobby Byrd who led the effort and hand-carried our application to the Tennessee Historical Commission this morning. Bobby’s supporting cast on the project are Lori Harless Grauso, Ron Tucker, and me. Thanks to Charlie Sedman who provided some of the historical documentation included in the application.

The proposed text for the marker is subject to changes by the Commission. As submitted it is as follows:

TITLE: CHATTANOOGA CENTRAL HIGH SCHOOL

TEXT: Site from 1908 to 1969 of the first Hamilton County high school to offer a full four-year course. The faculty and its first 19 graduates gave birth to a lasting spirit of academic and athletic excellence. In 1919, the first Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps unit in Tennessee activated here. In 1963, based on all-around merit, Central proudly accepted the 22nd annual National Bellamy Award, one of the nation’s highest honors for secondary educational institutions.

The maximum number of characters and spaces the Commission allows is 483 (one-inch letters) in the text, and their representative suggested we not use abbreviations and acronyms. All text must be “historically significant” and documented. The bibliography has nine documents.
