Class of 1965 Blog

Back in the fall of 1959 when most of our Connection Crowd had already passed under the Rotunda for the last time, the Central Junior High football team was setting the stages for a Championship run, not in 1959, but for 1962.   This team had well-known Central football names on the roster - Etter, Phillips, Slaten, Robbs (two of them), and one Harless.   The Harless kid did not have Butch's frame and was not very fast, and (I thought) would have a hard time ever seeing any playing time in a Pounder uniform.  So in the fall of 1964, as I sat at Chamberlain Field and watched this skinny Harless kid run for over 150 yards against East Ridge, I remembered those doubts.   The kid had a lot of heart.  So take care of that big heart, Mr. Harless...the big guys from the '62 State Champs want to see you at future football team reunions.
